For all of you moms & dads out there, you should know that as a father, I am extremely protective of my 9 year old daughter. For my followers on Facebook and Twitter as well as my clients, that same passion I have to protect my family goes out to all of you too.

Most of the time, I try to educate, enlighten, and entertain families about scorpion prevention. Having a child in the hospital for any reason is a frightening, traumatic, & expensive experience, especially if that hospital visit was due to a scorpion that could have been avoided with a few precautions. That is why I always do my best to make sure that your family is as protected as mine is from scorpions.

However, protecting your family from scorpions needs to take a back seat to greater threats your kids will face in the next day and a half: 4th of July fireworks, drunk drivers, & heat.

Fireworks are illegal to use in most Phoenix area cities, but that will not stop countless people from wanting to celebrate in their yards, or out in the street, possibly in front of your house and in front of your children. Some parents in your neighborhood might even let their own kids light off fireworks. It doesn't really matter if an adult, teen, or child is walking around your neighborhood with a pack of matches breaking the law. The fact is that children can be burned, houses can catch on fire, and as a responsible parent, you need to be proactive to insure your kids are safe this holiday. Besides, even if done safely by an adult, if fireworks are illegal in your city, don't teach your kids it's ok to break the law. Go to one of the many safe public displays to enjoy with your family and stay away from the local, illegal pranksters that might cause a threat.

Drunk drivers are especially a threat to children any weekend, but especially the 4th of July weekend. More kids will be out at night, and more people will be out drinking which makes for a bad combination. If you are out with your family the next two nights, be extra cautious crossing streets. Remember that while you are looking up in the sky at your town's fireworks, you might miss your child darting in front of a car. Even a sober driver will not be able to stop their car in time to avoid hitting a child who sprints unannounced across a street.

Record breaking heat is another threat you need to be aware of this weekend. Just like scorpions are a new experience to most families moving to AZ, our "dry heat" can trick parents because their children will not sweat as much. Also, the sun is much more intense in Phoenix than in most other places. Make sure you apply sunscreens early and often, and drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration and heatstroke. Lastly, the heat will see more children in swimming pools this weekend. Sadly, some of them will be unsupervised and will drown. Please watch your kids around water.

I'm not suggesting anyone forget about scorpions. However, especially for the next day and a half, be aware that your children in Arizona are more at risk from 4th of July heat, drunk drivers, & fireworks.
